JLPT N3 Kanji List: All 370 Kanji With Meanings

Short answer: JLPT N3 is the middle level, and the list below has the 370 kanji that Kanji Guide places at N3, with meanings, readings and stroke counts. Together with N5 (81) and N4 (169), that makes 620 kanji, close to the commonly quoted estimate of about 650 for N3.

As with every level, there is no official list. The organisers stopped publishing one in 2010, so every N3 list online is an approximation. For how the numbers fit together, see how many kanji are in each JLPT level.

How N3 differs from N4

N5 and N4 are about the basics of daily life. N3 moves into the kanji you need for news headlines, notices, simple articles and conversations about feelings, work and society. Three changes stand out:

• More abstract meanings. Kanji like 権 (rights), 政 (politics) and 識 (discriminating) do not draw a picture. Stories help most here.
• More strokes. Many N3 kanji have 12 or more strokes. They are usually built from parts you already know.
• More compounds. Most N3 kanji are met in two-kanji words, so their on readings matter more.

Study tips for N3

1. Use parts you know. Most N3 kanji contain N5 and N4 kanji. 晴 (clear up) is sun plus blue:

The sun (日) comes out and the blue (青) sky appears as the clouds clear up.

2. Group by theme. Some natural clusters in this list:

• Feelings: 怒, 恐, 怖, 悲, 喜, 愛, 恥, 感, 情
• Weather and light: 雪, 晴, 陽, 暗, 景
• Body: 首, 耳, 歯, 頭, 顔, 髪, 腹
• Opposites: 勝 and 負, 押 and 引, 寒 and 熱

3. Slow down for look-alikes. 未 (not yet) and 末 (extremity) are both in N3, and they differ by which horizontal is longer. Their stories separate them:

A young tree (木) with a short top branch is not yet fully grown.

A tree (木) stretches its long top branch out to the farthest extremity.

4. Use sound parts for readings. N3 has many members of phonetic families: 晴, 精 and 情 share 青; 反 gives ハン. See phonetic components.

Stories and pictures

Every N3 kanji in Kanji Guide has a story, readings, example words and an animated stroke order. There are no pictures for N3 yet: pictures exist for N5 and part of N4 today. The large character and the story are shown instead. Here is the story for 勝 (victory), with 負 (defeat):

A champion hoists a golden moon (月) trophy high with all her power (力), a joyful victory.

All your coins (貝) are tied up in one bad bet, so you have to admit defeat.

A pace for N3

At five new kanji a day, the 370 take about 74 days. At ten a day, about 37. Reviews from earlier days will take more time than the new kanji themselves, so pick the pace that keeps your daily reviews comfortable. See how many kanji per day.

N3 is also where vocabulary matters more than ever. For each kanji, learn at least one common word that uses it.

What comes before and after

If N4 is not solid yet, review the N4 kanji list first; the N5 list is the starting point.
